This Is How iOS 4.1 HDR Photos Look In Reality

This Is How iOS 4.1 HDR Photos Look In Reality

Apple's iOS 4.1 will give us the ability to take HDR photos with our iPhone devices, but how will those photos look? We spent some time with the iOS 4.1 Gold Master and found out.

The idea behind HDR photos is that they look more similar to what our eyes see than regular photos. In many cases this leads to particularly bright and vibrant photos, but in the case of the iPhone 4 and iOS 4.1's HDR feature it didn't always seem that way.

While we've only played around with the feature for a while, we noticed that it seems to favor—or even privilege—highlights. This makes some of the HDR photos seem washed out next to their non-HDR counterparts while making the colors look more natural. It also means that the iPhone 4's tricky white balance troubles are practically an issue of the past.

It's worth nothing however, that the HDR feature does seem to struggle a bit in case of environments with low level lighting or situations where there isn't a dynamic range to exploit. My bathroom appears to cause one of those situations because my poor rubber duckies confused the HDR feature and resulted in a funky, messed up image despite the iPhone being held perfectly still during the photo:

That little quirk aside, the HDR feature seems to lead to far more natural looking photos in general. But since it's not always easy to predict when this will be the case, I recommend toggling the photo settings to save both the HDR version of a photo as well as the normally exposed version.

人眼的受光範圍與自然界的發光範圍.及CCD與CMOS或傳統銀鹽軟片(FILM)的曝光寬容度不同,或許HDR是要修正影像反差與顏色使人眼視覺實體經驗相當吧?!

What Are HDR Photos?

What Are HDR Photos?

The most surprising nugget Apple's including in iOS 4.1 is the ability to take HDR photos. You've seen plenty of these before—photographs with vibrant, unreal colors—but what are they exactly?

They're photos...

You know, photographs. The HDR stands for "high dynamic range"—the range between the lightest and darkest areas of the image—and the idea is that they look more similar to what your eyeball sees than regular photographs.

...made of several photos...

HDR images are achieved by blending several photos with different exposures—usually at least over-exposed and one under-exposed—to make for a more dynamic scene. Jobs suggested that the iPhone and iPod Touch would be shooting real HDR photos, that is, a combination of a few shots snapped in rapid succession, as opposed to just some software approximation of HDR.

...that look kinda unreal but pretty awesome.

HDR photos have long been maligned as a gimmick, creating over-saturated circus shots. But on a smartphone they kinda make sense—tons of people use apps like Hipstamatic and Camera+ to jazz up their photos, and built-in HDR is bound to give iPhone shots a bit of extra punch.

Future Apple Gadgets Getting AirPlay Wireless Music and Video Streaming With iOS 4.2

Future Apple Gadgets Getting AirPlay Wireless Music and Video Streaming With iOS 4.2iPad with iOS 4.2 is almost everything we've wanted in the iPad since getting an iPhone 4, plus something we've wanted from the beginning: streaming music and video from iTunes to iOS devices with AirPlay. It's coming out in November.

AirTunes has been remade into AirPlay, which now streams more than music over iTunes—it streams video, photos and music from iTunes to devices, or from say, an iPhone to an Apple TV. The other new wireless power is wireless printing, which Steve demoed from Pages.

On the iPad, multitasking looks and works just like iOS 4 on the iPhone 4 and 3GS.

The only bad part? It's not coming out until November—for iPads, iPhones and iPod touches—which means our iPads are going to keep feeling like fossils until then.

Sony announces cloud-based music service V.S. Apple Music Services

BERLIN--Sony announced a new service Monday called Music Unlimited that will turn many of its electronics products into online libraries for streaming music.

"It is a cloud-based digital music streaming service that gives music lovers access to millions of tracks stored and synced with your devices," said Fujio Nishida, president of Sony Europe, at a press event here. The service "will be going live by the end of the year," he said.

Music Unlimited joins the already available video-on-demand service of Sony's Qriocity service, which now sports a two-part tagline: "Music that follows you. Instant blockbuster movies."

Sony announced Music Unlimited at the IFA electronics show here. The timing, though, illustrates just how hard it will be for Sony to fulfill its ambitions: on the same day, Apple refreshed its dominant iPod and iTunes product line that has thwarted Sony's music ambitions for years. This isn't the first time it's tried, either: Sony closed down its Connect music store, after years of effort.

Sony's service is very different from Connect and from Apple's approach, though. With iPods and iTunes, customers buy music online or copy it from CDs and store it on their iPods, iPhones, iPads, and in their iTunes libraries. And of course, it includes video as well.

It's a device-centric approach so far, Apple's LaLa acquisition notwithstanding, and it's proved successful: Through it, 12 billion songs, 450 million TV shows, 100 million movies, and 35 million books have been downloaded so far, Apple said Wednesday.

With Sony's Qriocity services, though, the music and video lives in the cloud, a dramatically different model.

With it, the music is sent over the network to a variety of devices: Sony's TVs, Blu-ray players, PS3 game consoles, and Windows PCs.

What about portable media players to answer the iPod? "It will increasingly become available on range of portable devices of the future," Nishida said.

Streaming audio over the Net is fine for broadband connections, but portable devices don't always have them, and when they do, data subscription plans can impose limits. However, mobile devices will be able to cache data on their own storage systems, said Chris Thielbar, manager of product planning for Sony's network services.

Some details are unclear still, including pricing and the range of music that'll be available. Sony still is negotiating with labels, Thielbar said.

Nishida promised a "huge libarary of music tracks in the cloud," though. In addition, Qriocity "will become a platform for a wide range of third-party service providers who can make the entertainment experience compelling and entertaining," he said.

In demonstrations of the service at the press event, a remote control could be used to select music, including selecting various genres such as classical and alternative; eras divided by decade; "premium" content; and music delivered by Sony's SenseMe technology to pick music based on a person's mood.

Users will be able to "discover music through channels personalized to their tastes," he added. "There's no need to manage music files. Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity will change the way we all enjoy our music."

Sony Walkman outsells the iPod in Japan

September 2, 2010

Should Sony celebrate now? Should Apple worry? Maybe not yet but soon. You see, the iPod has been selling like pancakes all over the world for years but not this time and in Japan. Sony has finally outsold Apple with their Walkman against the iPod.

According to research firm BCN, Sony is the no. 1 in the PMP category last August. It was the first time since the group started their sales surveys.

Last August, Sony Walkman had a 47.8 percent share against the 44 percent of the iPod.

Will this change now that new iPod models have been revealed yesterday?
